Shot on Leica Q · San Francisco and Sausalito

At the end of last year, during the winter holidays, my sister and mother visited us. We spent a weekend in Sausalito and San Francisco.
The highlight of the trip was a tour of Heath Ceramics’ Sausalito factory. Heath is a local institution founded in the 1940s by Edith Heath. They are best known for their handmade housewares and tiles made from California clay.
PBS station KCET made an excellent hour-long documentary about the company as part of its Emmy-winning Artbound series. It covers everything from Edith’s initial vision, her challenges as a female leader in a male-dominated world, the languishing of the company as she aged, and the company’s eventual revival. Watch it on pbs.org or below.
In addition to the factory tour, we walked around a sleepy Sausalito and visited a few local restaurants. The weather was overcast and gray—perfect for some photography.
